1 这句话意思是大约有2000人在这个项目中工作,他们中的许多人曾经失业.英语中一句话只能有一个动词.如果是them,原句就应该是两句话了：About 2000 people worked on the project.Many of them were those who had been out of work.代词Many 成了第二句的主语.否则一句话里就有worked和were两个动词了.
whom 在这里指代前面的people,本来因该是who were those who had...但是前面有了个many of,介词of 后面跟宾格,就是who了.
2 从句还原错了.应该是we spent the days on the island.Spend是及物动词,days 是宾语.所以是that不是when 也不是on which.
语法里那几个从句不是一两句说得清楚的.可说的内容太多.你有具体问题可以给我发消息.

1 英语句子不是不能有两个主语,只不能有两个动词.比如Jim and I work in this company.不就是两个动词么.
2 spend 作为及物动词后面不加介词 spend two days on the work/spend 100 yuan on the book
