Abstract:In the last twenty years or so,the teaching of reading has emerged as an important component of language instruction,especially in China and other countries where English is taught as a foreign language(such as Japan,Korea,and India),reading has traditionally been an integral part of the language course.And as English has developed into a world language,students,researchers,business people,and many others have had to learn to read well in English in order to have access to materials available only in English.
Today,as many English teachers recognize the important of reading instruction,they are looking for new,effective ways to teach reading.But simple”recipes”are not enough.When their teaching is based on an understanding of underlying theories of reading and literacy development,teachers can be more confident and can plan more coherent lessons.Therefore,some connections need to be made between theory and classroom practice.
