我的理解是：由上文James Cook和Joseph Banks一起参与了由政府赞助的Endeavour,这是人类一项伟大的远洋探索.最后一段提到从那以后James Cook又进行了两次远洋探索,又有新的伟大发现,又赚了大钱；而Banks没有在参加,而是从事研究,他与Cook相比就是“在幕后工作”.其实直译就是“在书桌旁潜心研究”,有点隐居起来默默贡献的意思~与Cook名扬四海形成对比
其实你不必拘泥于教参或是老师讲的,每个人都有自己的理解,关键是你要花时间去读课文,去体会英文用词的妙处.
说句不该说的话,高考只要你会做题,课文不用太重视的.不过你能问这种问题,一定英语很强啦~
