A Hero?s Welcome
Based on the movie from the academy award wining creators of Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo, comes THQ?s latest addition to their collection of licensed games (such as ?Finding Nemo? and ?The Polar Express?). Set along the events of the hilarious animated movie ?The Incredibles?; this 3rd person action/adventure game has you fighting nefarious villains like Bomb Voyage and Syndrome with the super human powers of the Parr family (Bob, Helen, Violet, Dash and Jack Jack).
For those who have yet to catch the movie, here?s a brief introduction: Bob Parr used to be one of the world?s greatest superhero, saving lives and fighting evil on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the city?s swelling expenses (resulting from the extensive real estate damage he caused), civil lawsuits, unwanted public and media attention forced our hero into early retirement. Fast forward to fifteen years later and this once great superhero involuntarily leads a normal civilian life, working as an insurance claims officer. The mundane job soon takes a toll on him and his family. His thirst for more superhero action is quenched when he receives a mysterious communication device that calls him to a distant island for a top-secret assignment.
The game?s plot ultimately ties in with the animated movie and the story unfolds via nicely animated cut scenes from the film. In a total of 18 linear levels; you get to use all the members of the Incredibles (except Jack-Jack). Wisely enough, the game design emphasis on each member?s own unique super power with each of them featured in stages that cater to their specific superhuman qualities. Mr. Incredible?s game play is light on intellectual thought: puzzles can be solved by smashing something or destroying switches. Most objects are destructible and can be picked up and wielded or hurled as weapons (You can pick up a baddie and hurl him across the room to destroy a switch). Though he may possess tremendous strength, Mr. Incredible?s Achilles heel is his slow recovery rate from handing out punches, which leaves him susceptible to enemy attacks.
Mrs. Incredible (or Elastigirl) levels shifts away from the intense combat faced by her husband. Instead, her game play utilizes her stretching abilities which enable her to swing over holes and obstacles or attack a baddie from a distance. The brother and sister pair of Dash and Violet, on the other hand, uses their speed and power of invisibility respectively for guard dodging, time and stealth missions. For example, one stage involves Dash running for his life through the dense jungle evading Syndrome?s velocipods while another leaves Violet alone in the jungle where she must turn invisible to sneak past Syndrome?s henchman.
The opening sequence of the game kicks off with a scene right out of the actual movie, with Mr. Incredible chasing a gang of thugs on the busy streets of Metroville. The action starts you off as Mr. Incredible (a.k.a. Bob Parr), with him standing on a roof of a building. There are a string of movements (though limited) that he can do. These include punches, jumps, rolls and throws which are facilitated by some neat ?on-the fly? tutorials in a form of narrated instructions. Furthermore, you?ll encounter Incredi-pointers in early missions to help you familiarize with the game?s controls and features. Just like in any good superhero flicks, you?ll have to fight your way not only through a steady stream of regular baddies but also a series of successively tougher super villains.
You can also man mounted turrets and destroy nearby enemies. Other enjoyable moments include a ?Dash? stage that will have him race against the clock to get to school while there is an ?Incredi ? ball? stage where Violet and Dash combines to form an invincible sphere of energy that literally bowls enemies over. In addition, you can also take an enemy?s vehicle or destroy enemies along the way during rail missions. These activities, although scarce, is a nice breather to an otherwise monotonous melee play by adding a little bit of variety to the action.
A face of things to come
The game?s interface consists of a simple layout that basically has the health and power meters ingeniously squeezed into one ?Incredible? icon at the top left corner of the screen. Throughout the game, heath and power ups can be picked up to replenish your meters as well as bonus items that unlock artworks and videos in your gallery. To boot, the game comes with some neat perks such as hidden game modes as well as secret codes to enhance its replay value. Players can also save their progress at any time by pausing the game.
The Incredi-actions of your avatar can be executed into a series of combos using the games controls (which incidentally happens to be one of the game?s major weaknesses). Initially, I attempted to play with the default keyboard setup, but I soon realized that controlling your avatar proves to be ?incredibly? (pardon the pun) difficult with the keyboard, even with only a few action buttons. For example, using the default controls, with the left shift key for grab/throw/punch, the spacebar for jump, the C key for crouch/roll and the Q key for punches are rather awkward and make the control of your character rather clumsy. And while the option to reconfigure the keys is possible, it?s not very ideal.
The artificial intelligence of your foes is rather weak and most of them will attack you en- mass. But while their movements may be rather erratic, they make up for it in numbers which the game throws hordes and hordes of them at you. Collectively, they do deliver some significant damage. But with some finely timed maneuvers, you can toss them around like ragged dolls or scatter them like bowling pins by employing some of your signature incredi-punches. Unfortunately, the confusing camera angles (which shifts at inopportune times) sometimes hinder the onscreen action, making it a rather frustrating experience ? even more so because it?s intended as a simple game for the casual crowd. To find any enjoyment here, you?ll definitely need a game pad.
