Internet Crisis
Many inventions bring goodness and convenience to our lives. The computer is probably one of the greatest tools invented. According to Dictionary.com, The definition of computer is “an electronic device designed to accept data, perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed, and display the results of these operations.” Therefore, it has flexible verities of usages. Computers were used for military communications about several decades ago but after it was discovered for more purposes, the true meaning of computer has changed.
People now use computers not only to store data, but also to edit a whole lot more programs and texts than it could before. PC games have changed a lot of kids’ lives. Some of them played games, got addicted to them and dropped out of schools because of that; some of them played, got addicted, but after discovering and developing their own skills on such things as computer designing, they became billionaires. However, these people aren’t even 10% of all PC gamers. As the birth was given to computers, the Internet hatched after computers. The connections between Internet and computer somehow made the attitudes toward computers even worse. Because people can share information on the internet through computers, the “information” can’t be all good and proper. Besides the fact that people are getting addicted to games or online surfing, violence and pornographies have also become big issues. Internet viruses, identity thieves have also caused many troubles to people who use computers. Therefore this question has been more and more considered by people: should computers, computer programs, and, most of all, the Internet, have more restrictions on people based on their background, ages or other information by the government? Or should the Internet be like what it is now, or even freer?
Many people may argue over the answer for this question. As we all know, restrictions have already been used for many programs such as video games and soft wares. But when internet has been so frequently used by people, very few regulations have be made based on ages. It’s a common problem that most of the internet hackers are teenagers or college students. They hack all different websites, from people’s personal sites to United States National Security website. Some of them hack websites for money, but most of them do that just for fun. People can hardly do anything to prevent this from happening because all the smart hackers know how to clear or change their IP address to prevent government from tracing them. Another key factor for these teenagers to do that is because overloaded confidence. They want to improve themselves by breaking the websites that seem to be impossible to hack. This is obviously illegal and foolish, but it seems a little crucial to put the young talented hackers into jails.
Many of the hackers have now been trained officially and are working for either government or large corporations to prevent the damage they have done to the internet. However, not every hacker can be found and trained to be put in good use. Internet hacking and viruses should be prevented, not corrected. The reason why teenagers are so addicted to computers is that computers are very much something they can have total access and control of. Most of American teenagers have their personal computers, and they most likely have passwords for their computers. First, the passwords give them security of using putting their information in their computers. After internet surfing, some of them might want to do more than just playing games, listening to songs or watching movies on the internet, that’s the beginning of the transformation from an internet surfer to an internet hacker. Because there is almost no rules internet and people can surf on the internet as long as they have internet connections. Therefore, no matter the age, the Internet gives them total freedom of doing whatever, however, and whenever.
More restrictions are the keys to the solutions to this internet hacking problem. Such regulations as “internet access registration” can be very helpful to internet security. The way it works is that if a person wants to have internet access with any kind of computer he has, he will have to register to a certain department, and have all his information stored in the system. So every time when he goes online, he has to spend a few seconds, entering his internet ID number to confirm his identity. Therefore, no matter how he changes his IP address, he and his actions on the internet will still be traced.
Identity theft is another problem existing on the internet, thanks to online shopping, people can now buy cloths, books, or even food online. The most common way of online payment is through credit cards and that’s where the problem begins. People’s information on their credit cards can often be stolen by “Identity Thieves”, they are special thieves that steal accounts and passwords from people without stealing their actual cards. So when you have your credit cards in your hand, it doesn’t mean that you are absolutely safe from identity thieves.
The best solutions for identity theft are both restricted regulations and Individual identity protection. For example, In the United Kingdom personal data is protected by the Data Protection Act. It covers all personal data which an organization may hold, including names, birthday and anniversary dates, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. Technology experts have been developing a new kind of credit cards called “traceable” cards. There is a tiny tracing device inside of the card, so when the card is missing, it’s easy to be traced back no matter if it’s stolen. But if the thieve can steal someone’s information without looking at the card, it requires more than higher technologies. People should also take caution by themselves when they’re asked to give personal information online. For example, when an online shopping site asks you to give your credit card information to them; ideally, before you do anything, you should check if they have the permission from the government of trading goods online.
According to the New York Times newspaper, “51 percent of teenage Internet users are online daily, up from 42 percent in 2000.” The majority of the online populations are the teenagers. Most of the teenagers have their personal computers and it is a fact that they don’t use computers only for studying. Since teenagers don’t have to take as many responsibilities as adults, they spend much more time on games or internet. As time goes by they will get addicted. Internet addiction caused the most problems among students, especially teenagers. In fact, most of the internet hackers are those who got addicted to the internet and computer technologies. Despite how effective “internet access registration” or Data Protection Act are, the most effective way of preventing kids from getting into the “hacking world” is to correct their behaviors caused by addiction. There are many organizations and even countries that are trying to make the corrections to internet addiction and save their children.
For example, in South Korea, there is a boot camp that’s built for the purpose of eliminating internet addiction. New York Times newspaper has made a detailed report about this. In the article “A Boot Camp Cure for Web Obsession” the author Martin Fackler argues that “It has become a national issue here in recent years, as users started dropping dead from exhaustion after playing online games for days on end.” Internet addiction has become a big issue that’s affecting every people especially teenage students. Such extreme cases of “dropping dead from exhaustion” have become more and more common in our daily lives. “Drill instructors drive young men through military-style obstacle courses, counselors lead group sessions, and there are even therapeutic workshops on pottery and drumming.” These activities can all happen without internet or computers. The purpose of this camp in Korea is to provide an “Internet free” environment so that kids can truly interact with each other and finally say goodbye to internet obsession.
Another problem among teenagers is online chatting. Because everyone can have whatever identity on the internet, it is fun and exciting to chat with someone that you don’t know. But some people can get very serious with online chatting, they will even give their true identities, or phone numbers to someone they have never met before. Problems, even horrible tragedies can actually happen just because of exchanging phone numbers. A real life example will be a case that happened in March 12, 2006. According to the Tampabays 10 news, a 66 year-old man named Brian J. Doyle made contact with a 14 year-old girl whose profile was posted on the Internet, not after a long time, they exchanged their phone numbers. It’s obvious that things would go even further after that. The girl was actually an undercover Polk County Sheriff s Computer Crimes detective. It turned out even more dramatically after that. The man claimed to the girl that he is the Deputy Press Secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Public Affairs in Washington, D.C. Instead of meeting the 14 year-old girl, he was facing 7 counts Use of a Computer to Seduce a Child, and 16 counts of Transmission of Harmful Material to a Minor. But not everyone is as lucky as the “14 year-old detective.” In real life, without a notice, you have probably given all your information to a stranger, or even a criminal. Just like the identity theft case, it’s really important to keep personal information confidential.
But the real problem is that usually adults have better restraint than teenagers. Therefore family education about online troubles such as web obsession or personal information is necessary, too. According to the author of the article “Kids in the Mall: Growing Up Controlled”, William Kowinski talks about the fact that American parents use shopping malls as their free babysitters because malls are ideally safe for their kids. Kowinski agrees with the statement that “mall is safe”, but Internet, on the other hand, has also become another babysitter for American kids. Since internet cannot physically do any damages to the children, most of the families allow their kids to go surfing on the Internet. Many kids stay on the Internet for several hours with the excuse of “online research”, but most of them spend their time on gaming, chatting or even online gambling and pornographies. In order to change this, family education on the Internet is necessary; therefore parents have to know the negative sides of the Internet, too. Appropriate Internet safety education is very important to families: both parents and children.
History has shown us the importance and benefits of standardization. The standardization of railroads during the industrialization made it possible for the western and eastern sides of America closer. This can also be applied to the Internet. Regardless how many different problems are related to the Internet, a standardized section of regulations regarding internet and computer crimes would be one of the best solutions to all the problems said above. A socially safe and secured country like United States of America is based on many regulations and law enforcements. One of the reasons why America has become so successful and wealthy within in 500 years of history is because of its steady legal system. It’s practically impossible to break the law and get away with it except for the movies. Why are the laws so efficient? They make people afraid of breaking them. Fear sometimes horrifies people, but the fear that practical laws and regulations make will only make people feel secured. One the other hand, the criminals will be horrified by the laws because they can barely get away with it. There are people saying the freedom of speech should be on the Internet, too. Yes it’s absolutely right, but when the freedom of speech has become inappropriate languages, violence and life threatening actions against the innocent kids, it should be stopped at some point and that’s when laws and regulations come in to play their roles.
Everyone shall have the freedom of speech, but once they do, they will have to take responsibilities of what they are saying. If they say or do anything against the foundation of a nation—laws, they should be ready to pay for the consequences. This is not against the basic ideas of capitalist country but at the same time, it provides a safer condition for people who are willing to obey the rules and under the rules, have their total privacy and freedom. If a hacker can go and look at anyone’s personal information, even if there is no law for the Internet regarding “freedom of speech” issues, people will still have no privacy, and because of the lost of privacy, there can’t be the freedom of speech. Not everyone will say whatever they want to, because they know that someday, what they said or did would be found by some hackers and that will not be the freedom of speech.
Think about the question again, should there be more restrictions on age? Should there be punishments backed up by law enforcements to the Internet criminals? Internet has become more and more realistic to us. From E-mail to online shopping, from newspapers to online news stations, it’s very likely that our lives will be depended on the Internet sometime in the future. It’s imaginable how much damage Internet without regulations can cause to the society and the whole nation. Internet will be much safer under the law protections. But nothing is perfect, like all kinds of laws, there will always be people trying to break them. So despite how effective more restricted laws can be, the easiest way to finally eliminate the Internet crisis is to be responsible for oneself, try to avoid troubles, and always take caution on whatever is on the Internet.
