Development and Peace
Development and Peace believes that the Millennium Development Goals
will go down in history as empty promises if world leaders do not
act now to end hunger and ensure the right to food for all.At the 2000 Millennium Summit,
when world leaders made a series of pledges to reduce poverty by 2015,the eradication of
extreme poverty and hunger was goal number one,followed by seven other goals which
generally seek to reduce the symptoms of poverty.
It is inconceivable that all eight MDGs will be reached if we cannot first ensure that we meet
goal number one – to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.All the goals are inextricably
linked,and the fulfillment or not of the most basic one will have a domino-like effect on all the
others.
It is unacceptable that more than 1 billion people1 still go to bed hungry each night,when
access to food is the most basic of human rights and is a question of fundamental justice.
Lack of access to food is not only a symptom of severe poverty,but also impacts directly on
other poverty indicators,including those that the other seven MDGs seek to tackle,including
universal access to primary education,improved child and maternal health and increased access
to drinking water,and the prevalence of HIV and AIDS.
The Millennium Development Goals:
1.Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2.Achieve universal primary education
3.Promote gender equality and empower women
4.Reduce child mortality
5.Improve maternal health
6.Combat HIV/AIDS,malaria and other diseases
7.Ensure environmental sustainability
8.Develop a global partnership for development
