It began with the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States. In the subprime mortgage crisis, many real estate businesses went bancrupt, which in turn resulted in the disasters of banks who could not get back the money they loaned. As a result, a good number of banks and financial institutions went into troube or went bancrupt, including those well-known ones (Lehman for example).
So we see here in this crisis the first one of the dominoes that fell is the subprime credit crisis.
